Frogs are disappearing

Frog populations have been declining worldwide at unprecedented rates, and nearly one-third of the world’s 6,418 amphibian species are threatened with extinction. At least 100 species have completely disappeared since 1980, and this is NOT normal: amphibians naturally go extinct at a rate of only about one species every 250 years!!!

Frog populations are faced with an onslaught of environmental problems: pollution, infectious diseases, habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and over-harvesting for the pet and food trades. Unless these problems are remedied, amphibian species will continue to disappear, resulting in irreversible consequences to the planet’s ecosystems.

Who we are

SAVE THE FROGS! is an international team of scientists, educators, policymakers and naturalists dedicated to protecting the world’s amphibian species: the frogs, toads, newts, salamanders as well as the lesser-known caecilians. We conduct and fund scientific research that directly benefits amphibian populations. We also engage in educational activities aimed at increasing the public’s awareness of environmental issues to ensure that amphibian conservation becomes – and remains – a top priority for current and future generations..

Our mission

SAVE THE FROGS! strives to be the world’s leading amphibian conservation organization: a primary contributor to scientific research, policy-making and legal defense; a major source of amphibian conservation grants to students, postdoctorate fellows, and academics; and the principal source of amphibian information and education available to the public.

Lacerta is de landelijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Herpetologie en Terrariumkunde (NVHT) en houdt zich dus bezig met reptielen en amfibieën. Zowel de bestudering en bescherming van deze dieren in de vrije natuur als het verantwoord houden van bepaalde soorten in gevangenschap behoren tot de doelstellingen. Herpetologie (studie van reptielen en amfibieën) en de terrariumkunde (het optimaal verzorgen en kweken van reptielen en amfibieën in gevangenschap) zijn nauw aan elkaar verwant.

De vereniging heeft veel kennis en ervaring over het houden van reptielen en amfibieën in het ruim 65-jarige bestaan opgebouwd. Momenteel telt de vereniging ongeveer 1200 leden, waarvan er ongeveer honderd in het buitenland woonachtig zijn. De vereniging heeft een belangrijke functie met betrekking tot het uitwisselen van informatie over het houden en kweken van dieren

De Stichting RAVON is een vrijwilligersorganisatie voor onderzoek naar reptielen, amfibieën en vissen. De vrijwilligers worden ondersteund door een professionele staf vanuit kantoren in Nijmegen en Amsterdam. RAVON geeft voorlichting, adviseert, voert onderzoek uit, beschermt soorten en hun leefgebieden, verzamelt verspreidingsgegevens en heeft twee landelijke meetnetten.
